Outdoors: Blog sends green message to UGA
A visit to trash-covered North Campus after any Saturday night football game reveals that the University of Georgia community isn't always the most environmentally conscious bunch.

But seven UGA students are attempting to influence their fellow students' environmental concerns, teaming with The Wilderness Society to develop a blog that will help spread the organization's conservationist message.
The site - "Wilderness U - Georgia," at wildernessugeorgia.wordpress.com - launched Tuesday and will attempt to engage students from UGA and other college campuses in the state on a variety of green issues.
"A lot of students know of ways to go green, but it's whether they choose to do it," said Lauren Rohde, a UGA senior in public relations who edits the blog. "We have recycling bins out on campus, but then you'll see trash cans that are full of water bottles, so you wonder whether they're actually gonna commit to it.
"But I've seen both sides" she added. "I've seen the environmental activist clubs that are really passionate about this cause and really innovative with how they choose to implement their ideas, and then the typical student that's wrapped up in whatever is going on that weekend."
The idea for the blog was spawned last year in Washington, D.C., when Rohde and her team members from Creative Consultants - UGA's student-run, not-for-profit public relations firm - met with Wilderness Society communications director Christopher Lancette, a UGA alum.
The opportunity to work with students from his alma mater has made the project particularly meaningful for Lancette, who has helped the students get the site off the ground.
"I remember from my days at the university, we were always getting involved in different causes," Lancette said. "To have a chance to tap into that passion and apply it to the cause of conserving some of our wild places that we have left in Georgia and the rest of the country, that to me is just a beautiful thing to be able to do."
